Food and Medicinal Uses:

Pollen cones and shoots were eaten.

Other Uses:

The cell walls of xémxem stems contain silica, and the stems were used like sandpaper for polishing, smoothing, and sharpening carved wood, and even bone. Also used for cleaning and scrubbing.
