Food and Medicinal Uses:

The sweet cambium (inner bark) was eaten after it was baked or steamed in underground pits.

Rich in vitamin C.

Needles are made into tea for colds, coughs, sore throats, tuberculosis, abdominal issues and diarrhea.

Bark is used as a wash to treat burns, cuts, rashes, anaesthetic.

Other Uses:

Boughs were soft and used for bedding.

Pitch was used to waterproof baskets.

Hard wood was used to make digging sticks, mallets, dishes, spoons, combs, and burned for fuel.
